Title of the change project Integrating ICT in the Teaching and learning in Ugandan Secondary Schools.

Country Uganda

Started date

Status (finished/ongoing)

Background Uganda has over 3,800 secondary schools however there is limited Information and technology (ICT) infrastructure and limited human resource to cater for the increasing need for ICT in the day to day running of the schools and world of work. There is a need to equip students, teachers and managers with modern skills and knowledge to cope with the changing world trends by use of ICT. Kololo Senior Secondary which was started 1954 with a population of 3515 students and 80 teachers can use these modern technologies to improve the teaching and learning.

Statement of the problem In Uganda, 45% of the Secondary schools that have ICT infrastructure do not adequately use it due to lack of skills and low ICT literacy levels of school managers, teachers and Students. The availability of teachers who can integrate ICT in the teaching and learning in Ugandan secondary schools is very limited however the unskilled teachers and headteachers can be re-trained to acquire the necessary ICT skills to improve the teaching and learning.

Justification Through in-service training, teachers and School managers will be provided with modern computer skills and others will completely be re-tooled to become computer literate. This will enable ICT integration in the teaching and learning. This will be done by provision of the desired skills to the teachers who will in turn integrate these skills through modern methods of teaching using E-platforms.

The Aim of the change project The main Aim/objective of the project will be to influence the integration of ICT in the teaching and learning in Secondary Schools in Uganda Expected results/outcomes • Improved methods of teaching and learning in secondary Schools using ICT tools. • Improved and increased means of sharing knowledge by teachers and students with the use of ICT. • Increased access to ICT resources by teachers, students and administrators.

Duration The duration of the pilot project will be one year and thereafter propose a roll-out to others schools in the next five years.

Target/ Stakeholders It estimated that 20 teachers and 2 school administrators be trained in modern ways of integrating ICT in the teaching and learning. These will in turn practice these new methods to deliver teaching and learning to about 400 students.

Financial implications and Activities The estimated cost of the project is 3.6 Million Shillings basing on the current rates as per Ugandan market. These estimates will be taken care of by partly the school and the Ministry of Education, Science , Technology and sports.

Conclusion The influence of ICT in the teaching and learning is the new way for teachers to demystify the teaching and learning. It is important for Ugandan teachers and school managers using these new ICT tools to improve the teaching and learning which will foster our secondary schools graduates to compete favorably on the global market.
