Growth in HGAPS[edit | edit source]

If you are looking to take on more of a role in your HGAPS chapter, you should:[edit | edit source]

  1. Designate more time to work on projects outside of the weekly HGAPS meeting
  2. Make sure you are attending at least 70% of the meetings
  3. Ask your project leader for more work to do
  4. Learn to edit Wikipedia/Wikiversity
    1. Completed all wiki trainings
  5. Complete tasks/assignments that you have been given in HGAPS (be reliable and a finisher)
  6. Compile your work in HGAPS to show why you should be given more responsibility
    1. For example, links to pages you have worked on Wiki(versity/pedia/media) and your wiki username, Infographics, Social media post drafts, google docs/sheets you worked on, OSF links, Qualtrics, Work logs/report outs of what you did during/outside the meetings, Zotero folders, etc.

Now you are ready to ask for a greater role and have the tools to do it![edit | edit source]

  1. Talk to the current executive members about opportunities to grow
    • This could include becoming a project leader
    • Running for an Outreach Position or creating your own position
    • Planning an edit-a-thon
    • Helping with recruitment
    • Working on advertising
    • Helping with social media
    • Being assigned to a special project that the chapter needs to be accomplished
  2. Learn more about executive members’ roles and responsibilities
    • Look over SOPs for the executive team and specific executive positions here
    • Ask executive members about their tasks and tips they have learned
    • Learn about when your executive team meets and how much of a responsibility it is
    • Think critically if you have the time to invest in being an HGAPS Executive
  3. Prepare to run for an Executive position
    • Attend open Exec. meetings
    • Ask more detailed questions about the position you are going to run for
      1. What would the current position holder wish to see accomplished in the coming year (if no longer running for the position)?
      2. What tasks to expect daily or weekly?
      3. What did they like about the position and dislike?
      4. Run your own ideas by them to get feedback
  4. Run for an Executive position
    1. Elections held every spring
      • HGAPS Election SOP
    2. You must be a member for a semester to run for social media or secretary
    3. President requires 1 year of membership and you must have at least two years at UNC remaining
      • If you will graduate in 4 years you must run as a rising sophomore
      • If you will graduate in 5 years you may run as a rising sophomore or junior
    4. You must:
      • Attend 70% of Thursday meetings
      • since becoming a member
      • Attend at least one open Executive meeting
      • Draft an Election Blurb
        • Examples and explanation
        • Be ready to give a speech on Election Day
          • A 3-5 minute speech that includes information from the blurb but goes into greater detail

*Please note that Executive terms run from the Last Day of Class of the semester of elections to the last Day of Class of the following year (Ex. 5/(LDOC)/20 - 5/(LDOC)/21)

**For schools on quarter systems or trimesters adjustments should be made based on your school
