What is GST in Nigerian education?

Are GST Courses a Must in Nigerian Universities?

It is no longer news that General Studies (GST) courses are a compulsory part of higher education in Nigeria. Whether you are in UNIBEN, UNILAG, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), or UNIUYO, every student is expected to register and pass GST courses before graduation.

The idea behind GST is to equip students with foundational knowledge outside their major disciplines – from Use of English, Computer Fundamentals, History and Philosophy of Science, Nigerian Peoples & Culture, Peace Studies, to Entrepreneurship. These courses are meant to build well-rounded graduates who can communicate effectively, understand societal issues, and apply ICT skills in real life.

👉 But here’s the big question:

Do you think GST courses really add value to Nigerian university students, or are they just an extra load?

How have GST courses like GST 101 (Use of English) or GST 103 (Computer Fundamentals) helped you personally?

Should universities like UNIBEN, UNILAG, NOUN, and UNIUYO continue to make them compulsory?
