Catalogue 22/Urban Cinema - J. Hickling
Designer: Jessica Hickling
Degree: B. Architecture
School: Carleton University
Location of Project: Rideau Parking Lot
Project Status: Unbuilt
Structurally the building consists of planes, lifted on columns which compose the central mass. Two theaters, one on top of the other, are located within the central core to create a project heart. Upon entering the Cinematheque, the desire to further explore the wood clad mass overhead can be experienced by ascending the dramatically lit circulation staircases. Acting like veins winding around the central heart, these circulation paths bring movement and excitement throughout the building, while also animating the facades. With a variety of transparent and translucent glazing the facades conceal and reveal aspects of the building during both day and night.
