Politeness and civility are similar, but distinct. The purpose of politeness is to show respect for the people you are now interacting with by acting pleasantly. The purpose of civility is to create the conditions that allow civilization to advance and prosper

These affirmations encourage you to be polite and civil.

The affirmations are derived from materials in the courses on: • the virtue of politeness, and • the virtue of civility.

Select affirmations from this list and repeat them often and in the moment, either silently or out loud, as appropriate. Address each affirmation to yourself.
