We are experimenting with TeamSpeak for audio recording.
Download the TeamSpeak software and "quick connect" to "newscafe.ansci.usu.edu" (no quotes). Pick your own username.

Planned session
[edit source]The Teamspeak channels are available for for spontaneous discussions of Wikiversity. Please list pre-planned sessions below:
- All participants in the Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia project are invited to a discussion, "Introduction to the Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia project". The plan is to record the Teamspeak discussion. Other audio contributions are welcome. For example, if you cannot use Teamspeak, feel free to use Skype or any other means to record your comments.
- specific questions: 1) What do you hope the project can accomplish? 2) What ethics/management issues are you particularly concerned about? 3) do you think this kind of project can help Wikimedians find ways to improve Wikipedia?
How to connect
[edit source]Windows XP
[edit source]It's fairly straightforward - simply download the free client from the teamspeak homepage, and you can use 'Quick Connect' to easily connect to a server.
Kubuntu
[edit source]Problems at the Beginning
[edit source]...With Teamspeak 2.0.32.60 + Kubuntu 8.04
- The first time I could not hear and send sound.
- Solution:
- Install aoss (because my alsa sound driver was not supported by Teamspeak)
- Start in konsole: kdesu (since Teamspeak did not start before and threw the message: cannot connect to X server 0.0)
- Start Teamspeak now with aoss: aoss teamspeak
- Solution:
- It seems my volume was too loud (you can hear also in the test recording)
- Solution:
- The best solution is: ask the others if they have problems hearing you
- In Teamspeak settings > Sound Input/Output Settings > Output Volume: decrease 2 levels
- Solution:
Adjusting the Volume
[edit source]When you join the Teamspeak Server, ask for help to adjust input and output volume and let you give feedback to your audio quality and how understandable you are.
The target is, that all users have the same loudness when they normally speak and not one is very loud and an other user is quite.
Push to Talk or Voice Activated
[edit source]You have the choice between (see in Teamspeak settings > Sound Input/Output Settings > Voice Send Method)
- Push to Talk - that means you need to press a keyboard button to talk or
- Voice Activated
If you choice Voice Activated, then adjust the level carefully. If the limit is too low, noise and background sounds can activate your microphone unconntrolled. If the limit is too high, then some words or vocal can be lost, because they don't reach the minimum level.
To do
[edit source]Ask User:Moulton about how to set up and use multiple channels. Admin accounts?
- Once you are regged, you can create permanent (registered) channels. If you are in as anon guest, you can create temporary (unregistered channels). You can switch channels just by double-clicking on a channel name. There is also a feature for sub-channels (break-out rooms) for a channel. but you must have Channel Admin privs to create sub-channels. I have to learn how to grant that priv. —Moulton 01:46, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
