- Tree type: Deciduous
- Leaf: Simple
- Leaf margin: Serrated
- Leaf arrangement on branch: Alternate
- Habitat: Best on moist, rich bottomlands--but also found on drier, upland soils
- Virginia Range: All over Virginia
- Fruit: Small seed secured by a papery, wafer-like covering; 3/4 - 1 inch across; smooth; ripening in spring.
