OBJECTIVE

By the next class period, students will be able to:

  • Determine the slope from two points, from a line, parallel or perpendicular
  • Determine the linear function from a given situation either with numerical values or real life example

The objectives will require that students be able to:

  • Add and subtract rational numbers.
  • Solve equations.
  • Find the slope from a graph, from two points, if the lines are parallel or perpendicular.
  • Determine the linear function by using different approaches.

THE CHALLENGE

SCENARIO: A business needs architectural services to build a handicap ramp. However, the ramp needs to be constructed under American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Your company was chosen because of your incredible and awesomeness architectural and engineering skills.

PROBLEM: The main entrance is located four feet above ground and 20 feet of front clearance entrance. YOUR JOB: You need to create a handicap ramp that meets ADA standards and is efficient for the business.

GENERATE IDEAS

How would students be able to find solutions for this type of problem?

MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES

The students work in small groups for 10 min and come up with ideas.

RESEARCH & REVISE

The teacher introduces the concept of slope. The teacher then explains how to find the slope from different problems; the students will work on problems. Teacher will explain how public and commercial buildings must follow a code of building and talk about the specifications of building an access ramp. Students and teacher alike will talk about how to solve the problem of the handicap ramp.

TEST YOUR METTLE

Give homework problems to students

GO PUBLIC

Students will have to make a scale model to represent the given scenario.
