I am not myself a historian. If you are, please consider contributing here. Nannus 13:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Just a note: This doesn't really belong in the Department of European History, particularly as it is a global topic. A course on "The History of Racism in Europe" should be cross-listed here and in European History, however. If you don't have any objections, I'll make the relevant changes. - Hi. I agree that this really belongs a level up. A specialized subsection on the origin and development of racism in Europe should be referenced from the European history section. However, in the times of slavetade and colonialism, European racism contributed a lot to the destruction of other parts of the world, so at least the Western type of racism has some world wide relevance.Nannus 23:59, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- One more thought about this: nothing forces us to build a strict hierarchy. In a physical university, you have to put everything into just one place, but here we have a hypertext medium. Something may be linked from European History, African History, Chinese History etc. at the same time if it contains stuff relevant for all of them. That is the reason why I did not call this a "Department", but an "Institute", meaning that it is not a subdivision of any of the Departments or Schools it is linked from. Maybe this should be indicated more clearly on the pages where it is referenced. One additional advantage of linking it from many pages is that it might get some attention. - If every single project that has something to do with European History was linked to from the European Department page, we wouldn't need a History School page, because 90%+ of everything would be in the European Department page (and it would eventually get quite cluttered). Individual materials relevant to European History should be listed there. This Institute, however, doesn't really belong there—it just belongs under History. European racism certainly affected the world, but not necessarily to a greater degree than Middle Eastern (semitic) racism—it factored significantly into Islam, and the Old Testament/Tanakh is rife with it (and it is arguably this which much European racism is founded on). Ultimately, global topics like this belong directly in the School of History, not under its subdepartments. If you want attention, I recommend posting on the talk page of various Departments, asking if contributors there would be willing/able to create projects related to your Institute. Proposed Move
[edit source]It has been proposed that this Department be moved to simply History of Racism, as it does not appear to have enough content to warrant Topic space. Any objections? The Jade Knight (d'viser) 03:56, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
