open and/or popular

How will a balance be struck between open and popular? For example.. MP3 and 4.. or Youtube etc? Leighblackall

Quick thoughts here - strive towards maximising openness - some compromise may pragmatically happen along the way - but if we set the bar too low because of laziness/convenience then we get sucked into the vortex of vendor lock-in etc. Open academia wouldn't exclude use of popular mediums, but strive to make available original, editable, open originals - e.g., archive.org I think provides auto-archiving to ogg formats etc.? -- Jtneill - Talk - c 00:24, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
