Crash cymbal technique

[edit source]

Article currently [1] reads in part Usually the Crash cymbal will be the first to warp and ultimately crack due to the repeated striking of its edge. As I've just said the Crash cymbal is played by hitting it on the edge.

Umm, NO. NEVER hit a crash cymbal on the edge (well, very gently for a special gong-like effect if playing ppp but that's an advanced technique probably beyond the scope of this article). A crash has a pronounced taper and a thin edge. If you hit it on the edge it will break, as you've found out. Hit it on the bow, with the shaft of the stick, held very loosely (I have videos of me hitting a crash cymbal and my fingers are around the stick but at the instant of impact they're not touching it at all), and you'll get a much better sound, and as a bonus you won't break your cymbals.
