Mid-Semester Comments:

You are off to a good start! My comments are designed to help you improve what you've got so far and ensure you are on the right track moving forwards. Also be sure to proofread--it helps if you read it out loud to yourself.

  • You might want to explain some of the terms you use a little bit better--I'm not sure I understand what "isolated school" is and how the system compares to what I know in other countries. Sometimes it helps to draw comparisons to the U.S. so readers can understand better what you are saying.
  • It is not true that Brazil is the only country with Portuguese roots. You might be falling into the "random googling" trap--this is why using the recommended sources is better! Some of the other countries with Portuguese roots are Cape Verde, several countries in Africa, Macau, and a couple of other places in Asia. There's a map on [1] of places speaking Portuguese, as well as other info on the use of Portuguese around the world.
  • You should expand your history section to talk about the slavery issue as well as how Brazil became an independent nation.
  • It's not "a civil law"; it's "civil law."
  • I'm a little confused by your section on governance--how is it a monarchy? Who is the king/queen? Does judicial review occur?
  • Under elections, you need to clarify what you are saying. Can 70 year olds vote? Is voting mandatory? What percentage of people vote? How are elections conducted, in terms of what we discussed in class? I'm not sure I understand your last sentence in this section either.
  • You will want to go back to the law enforcement section--and other sections we've already discussed--before the final version is due in order to refine what you have to say in terms of the concepts discussed in class.
  • Your discussion of crime rates is good. You might want to say "a country in which there is a lot of tourism" rather than "a tourism country." It might help to draw some comparisons between crime rates in Brazil and elsewhere.

You are on the right track. Keep it up.
