No, this term is not "loosely connected" to the concept of the common field of work. On the contrary, one cannot talk about the one without the other, and they can only be defined/explained in relation to each other. See e.g. Schmidt, K. (1994). Modes and Mechanisms of Interaction in Cooperative Work.
