In this section we will discuss what are colloids or colloidal solutions. Also we will know about an interesting feature of a colloidal solution.

~ WHAT IS A COLLOIDAL SOLUTION?

These are heterogeneous mixtures in which the particle size is too small to be seen with naked eye,but is big enough to scatter light. The particles are called the DISPERSED PHASE and the medium in which they are distributed is called the DISPERSION MEDIUM.

~ PROPERTIES OF COLLOIDS:

The particles of a colloid are uniformly spread throughout the solution.
The solutions seems to be homogeneous due to the smaller size of the particles. It is a HETEROGENEOUS mixture.

~ TYNDALL EFFECT:

Tyndall effect is a significant phenomenon shown by colloidal solutions.

WHAT IS TYNDALL EFFECT?: scattering of a beam of light .

PHENOMENON:https://youtu.be/V7eqD-Jw6m4

~ EXAMPLE:

Tyndall effect can be observed when sunlight passes through the canopy of a dense forest. In the forest mist contains tiny droplets of water, which act as particles of colloid dispersed in air.
