Detention Cistern[edit | edit source]

A storage tank or cistern that is typically buried below ground and captures stormwater from a specific drainage area. The water is not reused and slowly releases collected stormwater into surrounding waterways to protect municipal and local treatment facilities and other water resources from the dangers of high stormwater flows. With some adaptation, a detention tank can be turned into a retention tank, or where the water can be reused.
