assistance dog is a general term for servce dogs. In California numbeted AD tags are issued at the level of local animal control upon provision of an affidavit. (CA Food and Agricultural Code). Private service dog trainers such as Dogs4Diabetics also use this term.

While some agencies, like HUD, use the term “assistance animal,” “assistive animal,” or “support animal,” these terms are used to denote a broader category of animals than is covered by the ADA.
