This is a subject offered by the mathematics department.
Discrete mathematics is a wide collection of loosely related topics. These topics generally share the feature that their objects are finite or countably infinite, which makes these ideas particularly applicable to computation and computer science.
The main tool of mathematics is proof of theorems. Discrete mathematics often offers ideal conditions to introduce students to the techniques of mathematical proof, as well as substantive results which are useful in further mathematics. Therefore this subject is often required, before moving on to later subjects in pure mathematics.
