Nilpotent mapping/Sum and product/Exercise/Solution

Let

φ=(0100)

and

ψ=(0010).

Because of

(0100)2=(0100)(0100)=(0000)

and

(0010)2=(0010)(0010)=(0000),

these matrices are nilpotent. We have

φ∘ψ=(0100)(0010)=(1000),

which is not nilpotent, due to wegen

(1000)2=(1000).

Moreover,

φ+ψ=(0100)+(0010)=(0110)

is bijective, and, hence, not nilpotent.
