denote a ${}K$-linear mapping. Suppose that ${}V$ has finite dimension. Then we call

${}\operatorname {rk} \,\varphi :=\dim _{}{\left(\operatorname {Im} \varphi \right)}\,$

the rank of ${}\varphi$.
