Learn SignWriting for American Sign Language/Introduction

SignWriting is a writing system for visuospatial languages, such as American Sign Language. Previous methods of writing such languages have relied on knowledge of another language (as in the case of English glosses) or have been found insufficient for everyday use (as in the case of Stokoe notation).

SignWriting uses iconic symbols to represent the body, it's movement, dynamics, facial expression, etc. It is written in columns going down the page, contrary to English which is written in lines from top to bottom, left to right.
