VIRGA'TUS (ῥαβδωτός). Striped, like a tiger (Sil. Ital. v. 148.); hence, of drapery ornamented with long stripes (virgae) of gold or various colours woven into the pattern, as exhibited on the tunic of the annexed figure (Virgatus/1.1), representing Priam, in the Vatican Virgil. Virg. Aen. viii. 660. Sil. Ital. iv. 155.
