VENA'TRIX (κυνηγέτις). A huntress, who follows the chase with the bow and hounds (Virg. Aen. i. 319.); more especially used to designate Diana, the goddess of the chase (Ov. Met. ii. 454. Juv. xiii. 80.), who is represented in that character by the annexed figure (Venatrix/1.1), from a terra-cotta lamp.
