SCULPO'NEAE (κρούπεζαι). A common kind of shoe or sandal, with a thick wooden sole, worn by slaves in the agricultural districts (Cato, R. R. 135. 1. Id. 59. Plaut. Cas. ii. 8. 59.); possibly represented by the annexed wood-cut (Sculponeae/1.1) from a small bronze figure of an agricultural serf. Pignor. de Serv. p. 526.
