SCRI'BA (γραμματεύς). Generally any person employed in writing; but more especially applied to the public notary or clerk, who was a free man, professionally employed by the state in copying public documents, &c.; whereas the ordinary copyist (librarius) was a slave, who worked for the individual that owned him.
