SARA'PIS (σάραπις). A tunic worn exclusively by the kings of Persia, which had a sort of reddish-purple tint (purpureus, πορφύρεος) decorated with a stripe of white down the front (μεσόλευκος), as is plainly shown by the annexed illustration (Sarapis/1.1), representing Darius at the battle of Issus, from the celebrated mosaic of Pompeii, in which the shades of colour are tinted as described. Plaut. Poen. v. 5. 33. Compare Curt. iii. 3. 28 Hesych. s. v.
