RATA'RIA. Enumerated by Aulus Gellius amongst the different kinds of boats and ships of which he gives a list (x. 25.), but without any indication of its characteristic qualities. Servius (ad Virg. Aen. i. 43.) describes it merely as a small ship propelled by oars — navicula cum remis; Isidorus (Orig. xix. 1. 9.) seems to imply that it was roughly built, and flat-bottomed, like a raft.
