PRONA'US or -OS (πρόναος). A porch, or, as well call it, portico, in front of a temple (Vitruv. iii. 2. 8. Id. iv. 4. 1.); forming an open space surrounded with columns and surmounted by a pediment (fastigium) in advance of the main body (cella) of the building, under which the altar was placed and sacrifice performed. The illustration (Pronaus/1.1) represents an ancient temple, known as the Maison-carrée, at Nîmes.
