PRISTA (πριστήρ). A sawyer (Plin. H. N. xxxiv. 19. § 3). The illustration (Prista/1.1) is from a terra-cotta vase of Etruscan or primitive Italian workmanship; which shows the use of a frame saw, and a simple method of supporting the timber to be cut by means of a stand and prop, without a regular saw pit.
