NAVAR'CHUS (ναύαρχος). A naval captain who commanded a single vessel in a squadron. (Veg. Mil. v. 2. Cic. Verr. ii. 5. 32.) But the Greeks gave the same title also to the Spartan admiral-in-chief. Thucyd. iv. 11.
