NA'NI (νάννοι and νᾶνοι). Pigmies or dwarfs, beings of diminutive stature, kept for ostentation, and as rarities amongst the number of state slaves (Suet. Tib. 61.), both males and females, nanae. (Lamprid. Alex. Sev. 34.) They were neither distorted in figure, nor of mental imbecility, like the moriones, for they were taught music and other accomplishments (Propert. iv. 8. 41.). The illustration (Nani/1.1) is from a small statue, probably executed as a portrait.
