MONAU'LOS and -US (μόναυλος). A single pipe, of the simplest character, and played in the same way as our flageolet and clarionet. (Plin. H. N. vii. 57. Mart. xiv. 64.) The Greek name also designates the person who played it (Hedyl. Ep. ap. Athen. iv. 78.), for which we find monaules (Not. Tires. p. 173.) The illustration (Monaulos/1.1) represents a single pipe of this description, from a statue in the Vatican, with a performer, showing the manner in which it was handled, from the Vatican Virigil.
