MENDI'CUS (πτωχός). A mendicant, or beggar-man, who lives upon charitable donations. (Plaut. Bacch. iii. 4. 16.) The illustration (Mendicus/1.1) represents a scene in the forum at Herculaneum, from a painting discovered in that city, in which a blind beggar led by a dog is receiving alms from a young female.
