MARCUS. A large iron-headed hammer, used by smiths, such as we call a sledge-hammer (Isidor. Orig. xix. 7. 2.); as shown by the annexed example (Marcus/1.1) from the Vatican Virgil, and used by one of the smiths at p. 283 (see article FERRARIUS).[Note 1]
