LEMBUS (λέμβος). A small seagoing vessel remarkable for its swiftness, more especially used by the pirates of Illyria. The distinguishing properties of the class to which it belonged are not ascertained; further than that they were generally small, and rowed with oars, sometimes exceeding sixteen in number (Liv. xxxiv. 35.); the largest of them being used in war (Liv. xlv. 10.); the smallest as fishing boats (Accius ap. Non. s. v. p. 534.); as stern boats towed behind larger vessels, in which the sailors or passengers embarked and disembarked from the shore (Plaut. Merc. ii. 1. 35.); and as river boats. Virg.
