LAN'IUS (κρεουργός). One who buys cattle to slaughter, and sell the meat; a butcher, or meat salesman (Varro, R. R. ii. 5. 11, Phaedr. iii. 4.); whence transferred in a more general sense to an executioner (Plaut. Pseud. i. 3. 98.); and to one who buys and sells cattle for slaughtering at the sacrifice.
