HELCIUM. Properly the loop attached to a tow-rope drawn by men (HELCIARIUS), which is passed over the shoulder and across the breast; whence it is applied to a breast-collar attached to the traces of draught animals (Apul. Met. ix. p. 185.), as in the annexed example (Helcium/1.1), from a painting of Herculaneum.
