EPIB'ATAE (ἐπιβάται). Marines of the Greek navy; a body of troops who served exclusively on board ship, entirely distinct from the land forces, from the seamen, and the rowers. (Herod. vi. 12. Hirt. B. Alex. 11. Vitruv. ii. 8. 14.) The Romans designated the marines of their navy by the term CLASSIARII.
