DADU'CHUS (δᾳδοῦχος). Properly, a Greek term, meaning a torch-bearer; but it is specially used to designate the person who, on the fifth day of the Eleusinian mysteries, conducted the initiated, with a torch in his hand, to the temple of Demeter at Eleusis, in commemoration of her wandering about with a lighted torch to seek for her daughter Persephone.
