COPH'INUS (κόφινος). A large kind of basket or hamper, very generally employed in gardening and husbandry (Columell. xi. 3. 51.), as well as for other purposes. (Juv. Sat. iii. 14. Id. vi. 542.) The illustration (Cophinus/1.1) annexed, which is copied from an engraved gem, probably represents a basket of this description; the flowers placed in it indicate its use, and the size is declared by there being two persons to support it.
