CHENIS'CUS (χηνίσκος). An ornament resembling the head and neck of a goose (χήν), sometimes placed on the stern of a vessel (Apul. Met. xi. p. 250.), but more frequently in ancient monuments, at the head. The illustration (Cheniscus/1.1) represents three of these figures; the centre one in detail, from an ancient bas-relief, of which there is a cast in the British Museum; the one on the left hand, over the stern, from Trajan's Column; and that on the right, over the prow, from the Vatican Virgil.
