CARROBALLIS'TA. A ballista mounted upon a carriage, and drawn by horses or mules for the convenience of transport from place to place, or to different points in the scene of action. (Veget. Mil. iii. 24. Id. ii. 25.) The illustration (Carroballista/1.1) represents an engine of this description, as it is expressed on the Column of Antonine; but it is too imperfect in point of detail, to give an adequate idea of the constructive principle upon which such machines acted.
