CA'RABUS. A small boat made of wicker-work, like the Welsh "coracle," and covered with raw hides. (Isidor. Orig. xix. 1. 26.) The illustration (Carabus/1.1) is given by Scheffer (Mil. Nav. p. 810.), from an old MS. of Vitruvius. The lines down the sides which are more distinct in the original, show the seams where the hides are sewn together. The form of the tiller and rudder, as well as its position at the stern of the boat, which is a very unusual one, but is also seen on a sepulchral marble in Boldetei (Cimiterj, p. 366.), indicates a late period.
