CAESTUS (ἱμάντες, μύρμηξ). Boxing gauntlets worn by the ancient prize fighters (Cic. Tusc. ii. 17. Virg. Aen. v. 379.); which consisted of leather thongs bound round the hand and wrists (Prop. iii. 14. 9.), and sometimes reached as high up as the elbow (illustration s. PUGIL), and armed with lead or metal bosses, as in the examples (Caestus/1.1), from an ancient statue.
