BIPEN'NIS (δίστομος πέλεκυς, ἀξίνη). An axe with a double edge or blade (Isidor. Orig. xix. 19. 11.); used as a chip axe (Hor. Od. iv. 4. 57.), and more commonly as a weapon of war. (Virg. Aen. v. 307. Plin. H. N. viii. 8.) See the illustration and preceding word.
