ASSIS (σανίς). A flat board or plank. Caes. Plin. Columell. Vitruv.
2. A valve in a water pipe, or water-cock, by the turning of which the liquid is drawn off from, or retained in, the pipe. (Vitruv. x. 7. 1.) The example (Assis/2.1) represents an original bronze cock, discovered in the island of Capri; the contrivance for turning the valve is distinctly apparent at the top.
