ARCUBALLIS'TA. An instrument for shooting arrows, combining the properties of the bow and ballista. The name points to a weapon in the nature of the modern cross-bow; but it is impossible to define it precisely, as the exact character of the BALLISTA is not sufficiently understood. Veget.
