ABAC'ULUS (ἀβακίσκος). A small tile or die of glass, or a composition in imitation of stone, stained of various colours, and used for inlaying patterns in mosaic pavements. (Plin. H.N. xxxvi. 67. Moschus ap. Athen. v. 41.) The illustration (Abaculus/1.1) represents part of the ancient mosaic pavement in the church of S. Groce in Gerusalemme, at Rome.
