Vehicle Movement Operations

[edit | edit source]Operate a fire department vehicle upon the public roads using due care and in accordance with department policy, local and state laws governing movement of authorized emergency vehicles.
Enabling Objectives

- Effects of vehicle control of liquid surge.
- Breaking reaction time.
- Load factors.
- General steering reaction.
- Speed and centrifugal force.
- Laws and regulations.
- Skid avoidance.
- Night driving.
- Shifting and gear patterns.
- Negotiating intersections, bridges and railroad crossings.
- Height and weight limitations for roads and bridges.
- Identification of gauges.
- Operation of passenger restraint system.
- Know safe following distances.
- Acceleration and deceleration while turning for weather and road conditions.
- Operate vehicle during non- emergency conditions.
- Proper vehicle position at emergency scenes for personnel safety
Backing Vehicle

[edit | edit source]Back a vehicle from roadway into a restricted space of 12 ft in width requiring a 90-degree right or left handed turn from the roadway with out stopping and pulling forward or striking any obstructions while using a spotter.

Vehicle Maneuvering
[edit | edit source]Terminal Objectives
[edit | edit source]Maneuver a vehicle around obstructions on a roadway while moving forward and reverse with a fire department vehicle and spotter and be to back through obstructions with out stopping to change direction or striking obstructions.

Turning Vehicle
[edit | edit source]Terminal objectives
[edit | edit source]Turn fire department vehicle 180- degree within a confined space with a spotter for backing in a area which the vehicle can not perform a u-turn with out stopping and backing up.

Maneuvering in limited horizontal and vertical clearance

[edit | edit source]With a fire department vehicle operator must be able to maneuver through areas of limited horizontal and vertical clearances, so the operator can judge ability of the vehicle to pass through the openings.

Defensive Driving
