<Ancient Mithila University

The examination system of the ancient Mithila University was known as ‘Salaka Pariksha’. It was conducted by Dvara-Panditas, who were considered the most learned and revered scholars at that time. In this examination, a candidate had to explain the portion of the page in a manuscript which was pierced by a needle. The candidate had to demonstrate their knowledge of the text, its meaning, its context, and its relation to other texts. The examination was very rigorous and challenging, and only a few candidates could pass it successfully. After passing the examination, the candidates were awarded degree equivalent to the modern graduation certification.
