Perhabs to be identified with dialect (Walloon) maringue "shepherd's loaf", marinade food for an outdoor repast (< L merenda "light afternoon meal", probably fem. ger. of merere "to merit", such a meal being part of a labourer's wages). Certain evidence is lacking. association with the town of Meiringen (Bern canton, Switzerland) is solely by folk etymology.

Not to be mixed up with merengue (sometimes also calles méringue; is of AmerSp origin: 1935–40) : noun - 1. a ballroom dance of Dominican and Haitian origin, characterized by a stiff-legged, limping step
